There was a Dracula in the 15th century: Vlad the Impaler. Stoker didn't know much about him (at least I don't think he did) but he came across his name in a book he was researching entitled AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRINCIPALITIES OF WALLACHIA AND MOLDAVIA

Vampires were very similar to Werewolves. Vampires and Werewolves were both nocturnal. They both came from the continent of Europe. They also eat humans. But Werewolves are similar to wolves, and they cannot shape-shift. Vampires, however, can change shape and are very pale figures.

Already in 1958, Cecil Kirtly proposed that Count Dracula shared his personal past with the historical Transylvanian-born Voivode Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia, also known as Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Țepeș. Following the publication of In Search of Dracula by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally in 1972, this supposed connection attracted much popular attention.
