Text Connection One:

Aladdin

The movie Aladdin shows social class. It shows social class because Jasmine is the princess, who is wealthy and on top, while Aladdin is a lower class citizen, who is poor. This shows social class because they both did not have the same amount of something, and you can clearly see the differences between them. Jasmine had more and Aladdin had less.

Text Connection Two:

The Selection

This book showed social class by everyone was split into caskets and it was all based on money. The caskets were in numbers, like eight being the lowest and one being the highest. They were all put in caskets, that showed where they were, but with our social class everyone can't always tell which one we are in.

Social Class Quotes

Quote #2

"'The handful of people in this town who say that fair play is not marked White Only; the handful of people who say fair trial is for everybody, not just us; the handful of people with enough humility to think, when they look at a Negro, there but for the Lord's kindness am I.' Miss Maudie's old crispness was returning: 'The handful of people in this town with background, that's who they are'" (Lee 239).

Explanation:

This quote shows social class by not everyone agrees that Negros should have the same right as the white people. They thought that since they have different colors of skin that they could treat them different from how they treat the people of the same colored skin. Some of the white people thought that the Negros were in a much lower class than them because of the difference in their skin colors, but really some of them could be in the same class, possibly higher.

Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. New York: Warner Books, 1982. Print.

Throughout the novel social class is displayed in many ways. There are many ways the characters in the novel show the different levels of Social Class.

Quote #3

"'How long did you go to school?' 'Two year-three year- dunno'" (Lee 185).

Explanation:

This shows Social Class because Mayella did not really go to school long, so she does not have a very good education. With her not going to school it showed that she is in a lower class. Usually people who do not go to school are in a lower class than other people, who are educated. If she were to have a higher education her and her family might be in a high class, but none of them really go to school that much.

Quote #4

Quote #1

"'Whole schools full of 'em. They come first day every year and then leave.'...'But what about their parents?'...'Ain't got a mother.'...'and their paw's right contentious'" (Lee 31-32).

"'The Cunninghams never took anything they can't pay back...'" (Lee 25).

Explanation:

This quote shows social class by the Ewell's never showing up to school. They do not really care about their education and neither does their father. They are in a lower class because of their lack of education. Their father does not really care on what they do, just as long they stayed out of trouble.

Explanation:

This quote shows Social Class by you can tell that the Cunninghams were most likely in a lower class. They came from a poorer family and did not have a lot of money to pay people back. If they borrowed something from someone they figured out another way to pay them back. They usually did favors for the people. Everyone understood that they did not have a lot of money, so they accepted the favors they gave them.

Example Two

Social Class

Example One.

Example Four

Another time social class is shown is when Atticus explains to Scout and Jem that they are not necessarily as poor as the Ewell's. Atticus says that the Finches are not run-of-the-mill people. They are the product of several generations of gentle breeding. This shows social class because of the fact that Atticus, Scout, and Jem are a middle class family. They are in a class higher than the Ewell's, but are not necessarily in the highest class (Lee 135).

The theme of Social Class is when there is a division of society based on social and economic status. There are many classes that one can be in. Depending on ones economic status or where they stand in a society, shows what class they are in. An example of this is when the rich and educated are upper class and the poor and uneducated are lower class.

Social Class is shown when the author describes where and how the Ewell's live. They live behind the town garbage dump, and it used to be an old Negro cabin. Also, the yard around their house looked like a playhouse of an insane child. There was trash such as broomsticks, a discarded dentist 's chair, an old ice box, shoes, radios, and picture frames, laying around the yard. This shows social class because they were not the richest people; they were in a lower class (Lee 172-173).

The Cunninghams are an example of social class because they were farmers who did not have much money. They did not have enough money to pay Atticus, who is a lawyer, so they paid them with what they had. Mr. Cunningham was one of Atticus's clients. They had a conversation about Mr. Cunningham's entailment which ended with Mr. Cunningham not knowing how to pay Atticus back (Lee 25).

Example Three

The novel displays social class by when Jem says that background does not mean old family, it really means how long you family has been reading and writing. The Finches had learned how to read and write a long while back, according to Jem. Social class has a lot to do with a persons education, it determines where they are and their class. This shows social class because the Cunninghams were educated long after the Finches were (Lee 229).
