Paraphrasing

First Stanza: The speaker is creating the allusion that his life has had no meaning and he is not experiencing life to the fullest. He realizes that his life has the potential to be great, however, he does not know how to accept the feelings and experiences in order to be happy.

Second Stanza: The speaker is trying to explain how he has tried to repair the damage he has done in his life. He says that he "reached out to love," meaning that he has attempted to restore his life but he does not have the motivation to do so.

Lyrics

Chorus: The speaker is understanding how he can experience life, and enjoy it, with the girl he loves. She makes him "feel again," meaning that there is purpose brought back into his life.

It's been a long time comin' since I've seen your face

I've been everywhere and back tryin' to replace

Everything that I've had til my feet went numb

Praying like a fool that's been on the run

Heart's still beating but it's not working

It's like a million dolllar phone that you just can't ring

I reached out tried to love but i feel nothing

Yeah, my heart is numb

But with you

I feel again

Yeah with you

I feel again

Yeah

Woo-Hoo (x4)

I'm feeling better ever since you know me

I was a lonely soul but that's the old me

It's been a long time comin' since i seen your face

I've been everywhere and back tryin' to replace

Everything that i broke til my feet went numb

Praaying like a fool that's been on the run

Heart's still beating but it's not working

It's like a hundred thousand voices that just can't sing

I reach out tried to love but I feel nothing

Oh, my heart is numb

But with you

I feel again

Yeah with you

I can feel again

But with you (I'm feeling better ever since you know me)

I feel again (I was a lonely soul but that's the old me)

Yeah with you (I'm feeling better ever since you know me)

I can feel again (I was a lonely soul)

Woo-Hoo

Woo-Hoo (x4)

(I'm feeling better ever since you know me)

(I was a lonely soul, but that's the old me)

(x3)

I'm feeling better ever since you know me

I was a lonely soul but that's the old me

A little wiser now

from what you showed me

Yeah, i feel again

I feel again

Theme

The theme of "Feel Again" is that special people can give meaning to a person's life and make a difference about how they feel. In the song, the speaker refers to having a "heart that's beating but not working," meaning that he goes through the motions of life withougt experiencing happiness, love, excitement, etc. Then, he met someone he loved that made him "feel again" and see the beauty that life brings. "Feel Again" displays how influential people can bring happiness and love to people that need it the most.

Song Analysis

Speaker, Setting, and Tone

  • Ryan Tedder, main singer of Onerepublic, is the speaker. The speaker's attitude shifts whenever he begins the song saying that he can't experience life to the fullest, however, "with you, I feel again," shows that there is a person in his life who gives him purpose.
  • The setting is wherever the speaker, Ryan Tedder, has traveled in order to find someone that gives his life meaning. There is no specific setting because the lyrics credit importance to a person, not a place.

"Feel Again," tells the story of how the speaker could not accept emotions or feelings until he met this influential person who changed his perspective. Saying that his "heart is still beating but not working" shows that the speaker is living, however, he is not experiencing any emotions or feelings that give life a purpose. "I'm feeling better ever since you know me/I was a lonley soul, but that's the old me" shows that the speaker's life has changed for the better because of this influential person.

I believe that this influential person is someone that that speaker fell in love with. Love is often associated with being a powerful emotion that gives someone a purpose to live and be happy. "Its like a million dollar phone that just can't ring" is a similie that the speaker compares to his potenital of having a happy life. Before finding the person that has made him "feel again," the speaker knew that his life had the potential to be great, however, he blocked out those feelings before he knew how love could give his life meaning and expose him to toher emotions and life experiences as well.

  • The tone of the song is that the speaker is hopeful and relieved. The speaker feels as though his life has a purpose because of the special person he is referring to that has made him "feel again." Finding this person has been an unpredictable journey that has had many ups and downs but the speaker is finally in a place where he wants to be.
