The coke is then sent to McDonalds where it is consumed in very large quantities.
A natural food system relies on the sun for its source of energy. however in an industrial food system, the sun is not enough.
Government subsidies control the supply of the commodity. Subsides also make the commoditipy cheap for big corporations.
A lot of farmers plant corn beacuse it is highly subsidised. A lot of fossil fuels are used in the process of planting and harvesting the corn.
One of the paths that the corn can take is to a high fructose corn syrup factory. Here the corn is converted into High Fructose Corn Syrup, a commonly used sweetener.
Fertilizers are added to the soil because there is no diversity with the corn when it is planted. The corn is planted as close together as possible, and corn loves nitrogen so the soil becomes depeleted of nitrogen. The fertilizer
Pesticides are added to the corn because a monoculture is created when only corn is planted. Since there is no self regulationwith the corn, there is nothing to eat the bugs/organisms feasting on the corn.
herbicides are sprayed on the corn because of the monoculture with the corn. Since only corn is planted, there is nothing covering the ground, so there is room for weeds to grow and potentially take over. The Herbicide
In order spray all of the fetilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, there are a lot of fossil fuels used with the large machinery. The " cides" also cause enviromental damage as the nitrogen for the fertilizer needs to be
With all the government Subsidies, there are a lot of farmers growing and harvesting corn. When this corn gets harvested, there becomes a 'Glut of Cheap Corn'. this drives down the price of corn, for large corporations.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener often used to replace cane sugar. HFCS is found in almost all processed foods and is very unhealthy.
One of the foods that HFCS goes into, is coke. HFCS is used to sweeten the beverage. It is used instead of sugar because HFCS is significantly cheaper due to the government subsidies and the glut of cheap corn
The HFCS factory causes a lot of environmental damage and uses a lot of fossil fuels. Also the corn has to be transported to the factories and the HFCS has to be transported to other factories.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is detrimental to our health especially in the amounts that most North Americans are consuming. HFCS causes obesity as well as other diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. There is no evidence to show that HFCS is worse than cane sugar but it is more dangerous. Because HFCS is so cheap, companies put it in almost everything, therefore we consume much more of it than we think.
Because the conditions are so terrible in the CAFOs, loads of antibiotic need to be put in the animals feed simply to keep the animals alive.
Another place that the corn is sent to are Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. CAFOs are where thousands of animals are confined in concrete enclosures and are usually left to wallow in their own waste.
Cows do not naturally eat corn. But grass is more expensive so the CAFOs feed the cows corn. In order to make this work the also give the cows digestive aids in order to help the cows digest the corn.
Because of the horrifying conditions in the CAFOs, the animals are very likely to die before maturing. To solve this problem the cows are given growth hormones to make them mature faster.
These CAFOs result in major environmental damage. The bad management of the animal waste can greatly impact the environment. Runoff from the toxic waste can contaminate the land around it and spread disease.
The cattle is sent from the CAFOs to meat processing plants. There the cattle are dismantled and processed. These plants have hazardous conditions and often hire illegal immigrants.
Despite the antibiotics, some cows still contract diseases such as E coli. This is because of the waste surrounding them and their unnatural diet. If E coli is ingested by humans it is very harmful often resulting in death.
These CAFOs produce a tremendous amount of animal waste. THe animals are either left to wallow in their own waste or the waste is moved to a "lagoon" as seen in the picture. This lagoon is literally a lake of animal waste.
After the meat is processed it is sent to McDonalds where is is made into a scrumptious quarter pounder. Yum.
The plants are very dangerous places to work. The workers can easily contract diseases such as E coli from the cattle. Also, if the meat is not disinfected properly the diseases can get into our food.
