Good night, and good luck

Good night, and good luck.

Alyssa Miller, Dylan, Noah, Brianna, Trisha, Essence

Like the previous anaphora, Murrow uses Epistrophe to cause attention to a particular point in this case he is saying that senator McCarthy has consequences and the people have to be responsible for it.

Dylan

Epistrophe

Dylan

Antithesis

The actions of the junior senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad and given considerable comfort to our enemies.

Murrow uses this antithesis because it emphasizes the idea of contrast by parallel structures of the contrasted clauses.

We can deny our heritage and our history but we cannot escape responsibility for the results. We proclaim ourselves, indeed as we are the defenders of freedom wherever it continues to exist in the world but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at

home.

Essence

Rhetorical Question

And whose fault is that ? not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear, he merely exploited it, and rather successfully. Cassius was right. " the fault, dear brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves."

Murrow uses this rhetorical question to make a point rather than to actually insist an answer, he already knew the answer but it makes a more clear point when the audience feels included. Though a rhetorical question does not require a direct answer, in this case it may be intended to start a discussion.

Good night, and good luck.

Murrow uses Anaphora throughout the passage. The repetition in an anaphora helps to convey a sense of intensity, emphasis, force, insistence, seriousness and determination. This technique effects the overall message Murrow wants to convey because the repetition of " We must " is intended to argue with a point made by McCarthy trying to prove him wrong.

Alyssa

Anaphora

Anaphora: Murrow uses this anaphora to build a climax and add an emotional effect to the writing.

Climax: Murrow uses a climax in order to display the many levels that someone could maintain the cause. ( write, associate, speak, defend )

Noah

Anaphora / Climax

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due processing of law.

Trisha

Appeal : Ethos

... to write, to associate, to speak, and to defend the cause that were for the moment unpopular. This is no time for men who oppose senatoe McCarthy's methods to keep silent, or for those who approve.

Earlier, the senator asked, "upon what meat does this our caesar feed?". Had he looked three lines earlier in shakespears "caeser" he would have found this line which is not all together inappropriate.

Bri / Alyssa

Anaphora / Chiasmus

" The fault, dear brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves." no one familiar with the history of this country can deny that, congressional committees are useful. It is necessary to investigate before legislating but the line between investigating and persecuting is a very fine one and the junior senator from Wisconsin has stepped over it repeatedly.

We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason if we dig deep in our history and doctrine and remember that we are not descended from fearful men not from men who feared ...

Ethos: Ethical appeal is trying to convince the audience of the character of

the Author. Basically meaning it helps project an impression to the audience that Murrow was someone worth listening to.

Anaphora: The repetition of " We will not " is intended to have the audience remember those two sentances because they were important in the argument against McCarthy.

Chiasmus:This device is effective because it lays stress on the second part of the utterance, which is opposite in structure. This effected Murrows overall message because it layed emphesis on the fact that senator McCarthy was a fearful man and the people should not have to follow a fearful man when they werent created by one.
