The theme racism is impactful because there was a lot of racism during the Great Depression and even just everyday life. For example, the lynchings, Jim Crow laws, and prejudice. Racism is a very bad thing and it shouldn't happen but it still does in the world.

Lula is basically saying blacks should stay with blacks and whites should stay with whites.
Jim Crow laws were the name of the racial caste system which operated primarily in southern states. It was a way of life and African Americans were regulated as second class citizens.
I think the significance of this photo is that there were a lot of good, hard-working men that were out of jobs. They had to go around with signs and try to get jobs. Some of the men were war veterans. I learned that many people were in need of jobs and money. Also it wasn't only African Americans that were in poverty. White, mexican, and black people were in need. Lastly, this time period was very depressing and sad for many people, and will hopefully never happen again.

Hoovervilles were shantytowns that cropped up across the nation, mostly on the outside of major cities. Homeless people built them and they were called Hoovervilles because everyone blamed president Herbert Hoover for the terrible economic and social conditions.

A mockingbird is a long-tailed thrushlike songbird with grayish plumage, and noted for its mimicry of the calls and songs of other birds. There habitat is forest edges and open areas, and they typically live for 8 years. They eat insects, fruits, and seeds.
