The apple is a symbol of real emotion. When Jonas first sees the apple, he sees it turn red, which is a colour in the colourless world. This is the first time Jonas realizes he's different, and as a receiver of memory he will begin to learn about emotions. The apple is a window to the real world, the one that Sameness has hidden.
The colour red symbolizes flaws in the community's "perfect" society. It shows danger and not all things are what they seem, and there is more to what we see then what's on the outside.
Symbolism is something that represents something else. For example, the story we read earlier in the year, The Terrible Things, was a symbol of the Holocaust.
Our symbol is a puzzle because Jonas before he gets assigned is like a unopened puzzle. Jonas does not know anything about his past, but when he get assigned he starts piecing together things from his past and starts realizing that there is more than just his little world and by the end he is a completed puzzle with all the pieces of the past.
Symbolism is used by authors because they want the readers to think and they can write about something without actually writing it.
