The Steel Pen

Ball point pens were first made inexpensive when the French Baron, Bich, invented a manufacturing process for ball point pens lowering the unit cost dramatically

In 1803, the steel nib was invented. By 1850, quill pens were not being used as much as the steel nib.

The Fountain Pen

The first true fountain pen was invented in 1884 by an insurance broker named Lewis Edson Waterman.

Ball Point Pen

The modern ball-point pen was invented in the 1940s by Josef Lazlo and George Biro. It wasn't introduced to the US market until October of 1945, where it was sold as "The first pen to write underwater".

A Significant Upgrade

Around 1300 BC, the ancient Romans developed a way to write using thin sheets of wax and a metal stylus.

Dark Ages

In the dark ages, there was another advancement in writing tools. This was parchment, it is made primarily from sheep, cow, or goat skin. Wax tablets were still used.

The quill pen was invented around 600-1800 AD in Seville, Spain. The Europeans found that it altered their writing style.

In 1795, the modern lead pencil was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in France.

The first writing implement was invented around 4000 BC. It was a bone or bronze tool used to etch pictures and symbols into a moist clay tablet.

The ancient Egyptians utilized papyrus (Flattened layers of reed) as paper with brushes and pens made of reeds.
