The Austin Family Tree

Lets take a look at Moses Austin.

Poor guy...

-He was awarded a land grant in 1821.

-This grant gave him permission to settle 300 families.

-Moses Austin became sick and died.

Beginnings

Sometimes you just need a friend.

-October 4, 1761 – June 10, 1821

-Originally from Connecticut.

-Moved to Missouri in 1803

Sought out to Spanish Texas to become a Presidio. Was denied until he received help from Baron de Bastrop (Felipe Enrique Neri). He was originally denied because of attacks on Texas from American filibusters.

1803?

What happened in 1803 that would make it possible to be an American living in Missouri?

Not impressed?

Anglo Colonization would not have been nearly as successful.

The Family Business

BOOM!

Finally! Can we settle down?

-It was up to Stephen to carry on his father's Colonization plan.

-Austin's plan for a colony was thrown into turmoil by the independence of Mexico from Spain in 1821.

-The Mexican Government wasn't honoring the land grants that had been awarded by the Spanish Government. Uh oh!

Ever been to Austin? Well it wouldn’t be named Austin without Stephen!

Why do we care about Moses and Stephen F. Austin?

-He was finally given 67,000 acres of land for each 200 families he introduced. According to the law, immigrants were not required to pay fees to the government. This fact soon led some of the immigrants to deny Austin's right to charge them for services at the rate of 12.5 cents/acre.

- Then something unexpected happened!

Government change again?

-March 1823, the law was annulled once again. In April 1823, Austin induced the congress to grant him a contract to bring 300 families into Texas. He wanted honest, hard-working, people who would make the colony a success

The Prodigal Son Wins!

How about this!

-In 1825, Austin finally brings over the Old 300.

-Austin had obtained further contracts to settle an additional 900 families between 1825 and 1829. He had effective civil and military authority over the settlers, but he was quick to introduce a semblance of American law - the Constitution of Coahuila y Tejas was agreed on in November 1827.

Texas would not be the same without them.
