Events

(Narrative/Aims/Methods)

After Freedom Rides, SNCC targeted Albany and Georgia to organise protests to end segregation. However, Local Police Chief Laurie Pritchett studied the strategies of protesters and found a way to deny them the media attention. He ordered the local police to treat the protestors with respect in public and not to retaliate with racist violence. Also, King was arrested during this protest and there is evidence that Pritchett arranged to have him released so that his arrest wouldn't gain publicity.

Legal Ruling

(Outcome)

None.

The Albany Movement (1961-1962)

Impact

(Significance)

  • Showed that peaceful protest didn't always bring change
  • Led divisions within the movement. Radicals in SNCC thought violence was more useful to challenge segregation as peaceful protest proved less effective
  • King acknowledge that his tactics hadn't worked - stated future campaigns need to be more focused on specific issue and target police chiefs who likely respond with violence.
