Enviropig

What is Enviropig?

  • Created in 1999 by the University of Guelph
  • Genetically modified Yorkshire Pig
  • Environmentally Friendly

Commercialization

  • Primary funding comes from Ontario Pork
  • Currently has not gained approval for consumption

By: Sydney Hay and Stephen Edwards

Hurdles

  • Unrealistic for mass comsumption

Next Steps

1.) Approval

2.) Find a partner

3.) Expand

4.) Negotiate

5.) Consumer buy-in

The Problem with Phosphorus

  • Excess amounts of phosphorus in the environment
  • Pigs are unable to digest it without a phytase supplement
  • Contaminated water supply

The Science of It

  • Transgene from mouse and E. Coli
  • Integrated into a site in pig's genome
  • Causes production of phytase

Effects of Phytase

  • Breaks down phosphorus in pigs' digestive tract
  • Reduces amount of phosphorus in feces
  • Does not affect meat or health

How It Happens

  • Secratory gland gene from mouse
  • Phytase production gene from E. Coli
  • Results in phytase in saliva

Facts About Phytase

  • 99% identical to commercial phytase
  • 65% less phosphorus in waste
  • Effective in low pH

Reproduction/Genetics

  • Stably transmitted in Mendelian fashion
  • Transgene integrated into loci of a chromosome
  • Only codes for phytase production; safe to consume

  • Reduces algal blooms
  • No synthetic phytase needed
  • Lower cost for farmers
  • Meat is still safe for consumption

Controversies

  • Genetically modified foods are not trusted
  • GM animals are often seen as morally wrong
  • Ontario Pork revoked funding
  • They're all dead :(
