By raising the minimum wage the incentive to get an education and get a professional, higher paying job goes out the door. Some people need to be pushed to work hard in life and achieve a better salary. Also, many states have already set their own statewide minimum wage. The minimum wage rate depends on the cost of living in that area as well as the economic stability. For example the minimum wage in Florida is $8.10/hour and the minimum wage in New York State is $9.70/hour.

The topic of raising minimum wage has been very controversial for many years. Minimum wage was initially enacted in New Zealand in the year 1894, and the first one in the United States was enforced in 1938. The minimum wage since then, has been increased 22 separate times nationally. The last time the minimum wage has been increased was in 2009, and it is a popular belief that the minimum wage needs to be increased soon. However, many of the people that believe so do not know all of the facts and the negatives that could come with raising the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage would not close the gap between the rich and the poor drastically, promote economic growth, or make it easier for people to get a job.

The raise of minimum wage would greatly affect the success of the restaurant industry. The restaurant and serving related industry hires over 1.5 million minimum wage workers. Restaurants would lose money very easily if they had to hire employees at a higher rate. They would be forced to lay off employees since they would be paying their employees more money than they're making.
