Carleton Watkins was born in 1829 and died 1916

born in Oneonta, New York on November 11

oldest of eight children

he did a lot of Western Photography

  • award winning photographs of Yosemite, San Francisco, the Pacific Coast and subjects throughout the western states.

moved to Caliornia in 1851 and by 1854 was working in San Francisco at the bookstore of George Murray.

In late 1854 Watkins met Robert Vance who had a gallery near the bookstore and he soon began to work for him.

it was there that h elearned the photographic techniques and processes that he would perfect during his career.

1858: He produced photographs for evidence in trials and also documented the homes of John and Jesse Fremont at Black Point and Mariposa County

In 1867, Watkins also traveled to Oregon and photographed Portland and the Columbia River area for the Oregon Steam Ship Navigation Company. The following year he exhibited 50 mammoth prints at Shanahan's Art Gallery in Portlant.

While he continued to travel all over, he used a wagon, which served as a portable dark room and also displayed advertisings for his San Fracsico studio.

While Watkins won acclaim for his artistic efforts he was not considered a good businessman and durin the financial crisis of 1875, lost his studio and negatives to creditor J.J Cook.

In spite of this devastating setack, Watkins began reuilding his inventory of negatives by revisiting locations he was well known for and started numbering at 3000.

By the mid - 1890's his deteriorating eyesight and other health problems impacted his ability to work.

The earthquake of 1906 destroyed Watkins studio along with the negatives of his life's work.

Carleton E. Watkins died on June 23, 1916 at the age of 87
