Transcript

- The typeface Bodoni was created by Giabattista Bodoni in 1798, which was during the early stages of the Napoleonic era (1740–1813).

-Behind the Bodoni typeface, Giabattista, also known as “The King of Prints” was influenced by the old style typefaces, which were Baskerville and Didot.

- He decided to give it a modern look, with adding more stroke contrast and a more vertical, slightly condensed upper case to make it more attractive to it’s audience.

- Bodoni is a series of serif typefaces

- There are 7 variations in the Bodoni family; Book, book italic, roman, italic, bold, bold italic and bold condensed

Essential Function

- The main function of this typeface was to maximize the stroke and create a large contrast leading to a very clean and sleek typeface

- Overall the font gives a more corporate look

- Bodoni creates a high contrast with each letter which is the most unique aspect

- For an example, the letter “A” has more stroke on the vectical angle than its predecessors font and has no bracket on Bodoni’s baseline compared to Baskerville

At a Glimpse

- Bodoni was the first in history to accomplish such a great contrast. Printing in the 1800's with Bodoni would create ink blobs, advance in technology made it possible to print in that typeface.

- Bodoni was known for its spectacular characteristics which consisted of: High contrast from thick and thin strokes, unbracketed thin serifs, horizontal weight , small aperture

Contemporary Use
