The cell membrane protects the cell and prevents the cytoplasm from leaving the cell. It also has different sized pores which allow materials and food into the cell and wastes out.
The Golgi apparatus (also known as the Golgi body) is extremely important to the cell because it stores, packages, and finally transports all forms of proteins the cell has. It is also one of the largest organelles next to the nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum.
The smooth E.R. is where the unfinished proteins from the rough E.R. go to be completed. It has no ribosomes at all. It may also have other purposes, depending on the cell.
The cytoplasm is the clear liquid inside the cell membrane where all the organelles are in. The cytoplasm helps transport materials, food, and proteins throughout the cell, and helps regulate the cytoskeleton.
The Nucleus
The mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) converts food, such as glucose, into large amounts of energy the cell uses. The amount of mitochondria varies from cell to cell. Red blood cells usually have none, but liver cells may have more than 2000 per cell.
The Nucleus is the brain of the cell
and controls all of the other
organelles. The darker spot on the
nucleus is called the nucleolus.
The endoplasmic reticulum produces
and transports proteins needed for the cell to the organelles. It has two distinct sides named the smooth E.R. and rough E.R. It also regulates the cytoskeleton throughout the cell.
Rough Endopalasmic Reticulum
The rough E.R. is clustered with ribosomes, the organelles that produce proteins.
Ribosome
The vacuole is a large,
watery organelle which stores all materials and foods. There is usually one, large vacuole in every cell.
Lysosomes are smaller organelles that
patrol the cell regularly and protect it from viruses. It is filled with a powerful acid and can be used to break down and reuse certain organelles that have been attacked or
overused.
