Words

Okonkwo tends to talk down to people. He criticized a man for not having any titles, specifically by calling him a woman. He tends to insult men by calling them feminine. When he is talking normally, he is very straight and to the point, albeit demanding. He doesn't talk with affection towards his children, as he views it as a sign of weakness.

Thoughts

Appearance

Okonkwo is usually deep in thought. Usually, he thinks about his feelings, which he almost never expresses because he feels they are "not manly." For example, he couldn't help but think and feel guilty about Ikemefuna and his death, and how he took part in it. He also often judges others. He usually thinks that his daughter Ezinma should have been born a boy, since he admires her. He also judges his son Nwoye for not being masculine enough.

Okonkwo is very strong and muscular. It was said that he was a successful wrestler. He is tall, and very agile. The reason he is strong is because masculinity is very important to him and the other men in the tribe, so he wants to be known as physically able and as a hard worker. Therefore, he works hard and makes himself strong.

Actions

How others act around Okonkwo

Okonkwo's wives are fearful around him, because they see him as their provider and leader. They are also scared that he will beat them. His son, Nwoye, is typically careful about showing emotion around his father. Despite being afraid of Okonkwo, they usually listen to what he says.

Okonkwo's actions can be harsh and unnecessary. For example, when his wife leaves without cooking dinner first, he beats her excessively. However, he can also be influenced by his fear of being thought of as weak. He cared for Ikemefuna and didn't want him dead, however his fear of losing his status was so great that not only did he let Ikemefuna die, he took part in killing him.
