Are you interested in helping the environment? One thing my Temple (like a church for Jewish people) does every year in Hebrew school is a donation system, and every time we do a page of homework, we are donating 50 cents to a charity of our choice, and last year we choose WWF, (World Wildlife Foundation) a charity that helps wild animals. One year, we did another different donation event. They wrote back, telling us we raised enough money that we had saved a tiger! they had also enclosed a picture of the tiger. So maybe you could do something like that for your neighborhood. Many small steps lead to one great deed.
Ever gone to the Farmers' Market? The Farmers' Market is one way to cut down on carbon footprint. The Farmer' Market is local, meaning less shipping and handling, which means less carbon dioxide. Also, eating simpler is better, because all the ingredients in many foods are from around the globe. Eat local, eat simple.
Livestock contribute 18% of Carbon footprint, and not only is going vegetarian or vegan helping your carbon footprint with that, it's also a healthier lifestyle for you. I myself have been a vegetarian since mid-kindergarten, and as soon as you get in the habit, you don't mind. Also, veggie meats are quite delicious, and they have soy in them for protein. For more information, watch the documentary Food Inc, available on Netflix.
At the farm, we have two different types of common lettuce. ( Romaine and Iceberg). We have one type of tomato, cherry tomatoes, the California almond, carrots, (not baby carrots) and strawberries. In addition to being eco-friendly, we treat our farmer employers well. Every half mile, there is a rest stop. The rest stop has cold drinks and produce. The fridges are powered by solar panels. The farm is located in California.
