Deepsea lizardfish encounter potential mates so rarely that they develop both male and female organs at the same time, allowing for self-fertilization if all else fails.
Deepsea lizardfish are either dark brown or black, and have black eyes. They are covered in tough scales with black lining in the mouth and gill cavity. Their head is broad and flattened and contains a large wide mouth with many razor-sharp teeth. They even have some on their tongue!
From the darkness of the aphotic zone (where less than 1% of sunlight penetrates), deepsea lizardfish feed on shrimp and small squid, as well as dead fish that have drifted down from above. They hunt by resting on the bottom of the ocean, using the dark to conceal them, and wait with their mouth open for prey to swim by.

Key features that appear at some stage during their development: a notochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail.
When waiting for prey, lizardfish use their 2 strong pelvic fins to balance. They act as stabilizers against the underwater currents.
Their needle-like teeth are to make sure their scarce prey can't escape.
The deepsea lizardfish is a carnivore because it only eats meat.
The deepsea lizardfish is a competitor because it doesn't break down organisms, but it competes for food.
The lizardfish can be a 3rd order consumer because it:

The deepsea lizardfish is a predator because it hunts for its food and has no known predators.
