Boomtowns
Boomtown life was very hard. They were very populated and it was hard to find a place to stay. Water was polluted and dysentery was common. The Texas Rangers had to be sent out to break up fights that could occur in pubs and taverns. All in all, boomtowns just grew too fast to be good cities.
When a large oil strike was made, many people would come to a town to get rich quick. These were called boomtowns. Boomtowns needed lots of workers to provide goods and sevices for all the wildcatters. Wildcatters were men searching for oil independently. The demand for goods and services was very high, and new job positions opened up. Oil alone was responsible for 1.8 million jobs! Boomtown jobs could include farming, oilmen, shopkeeping, and other jobs. As towns became urban cities, more professional positions opened up. These could include banking, retail, real estate, and sales.

The increase in demand of oil made communities make more oil companies. When the people arrived to the towns, they bought the oil, and word spread that the town had a large supply of oil, making more people move there. This gave these companies massive amounts of money.
Many areas of Texas were affected by urbanization, such as Houston, Midland, Odessa, Beaumont, and Port Arthur. These areas owe most of their urbanization to the growing oil industry.
