By: Marley Donovan
Romeo and Juliet was the works of famous playwright, William Shakespeare during the elizabethan era in England. We first start off and meet Romeo, a young, hasty teenager whos life takes a love sick turn for the worst. Today we are looking at what aspects of a tragic hero, Shakespeare put into Romeo as a character. Romeo would be considered a tragic hero through the qualifications of our Tragic hero notes.

To begin with, we can first qualify Romeo Montague as a tragic hero by his uncommon suffering with his secret wife, Juliet. As seen on page 1042," How oft when man are at the point of death have they been marry?" From the text said by Romeo we can see that he is acknowledging the fact that he going to die by his own hand. He is doing so for his wife, Juliet. Also on page 1045," This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die." Here we can infer that Juliet is also bound to die by her own hand as did Romeo. So not only did he die but he also caused the suicide of Juliet. We can see Romeo as a tragic hero with his definant uncommon suffering. This could also tie into how he has realized his actions and punished himself harshly.

Second, Romeo can be classified as a tragic hero because he a noble figure that is bigger than us normal citizens. Read on page 966," His name is Romeo, and a Montague, the only son of your great enemy." Here we can infer that a fued between two powerful families in Verona is going to be one of the primary fuels to the conflict. The Montague family is one of the main role models in Verona's society. It also can be read on page 941, at the start of the play,"From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,...". With this family power and influence, it is more likely to see an extra twisted turn of events. Which in turn makes the tragic hero more likely to experiance the drastic turn of events. Romeo would be considered a character "bigger" than us.

Lastly, Romeo would be considered a Tragic hero because he has suffered a reversal of fortune on a high level. Located on page 1037,"Put this in any liquid thing you will and drink it off, and if you had the strength of twenty men, it would dispatch you straight." Here we find Romeo buying a poison from an apothecary for himself at the "loss" of his beloved Juliet. This is an example of a reversal of fortune because in the start of his relationship with Juliet he is a happy, irrational, love drunk teenager with everything to loose. And now he has lost everything is going to kill himself over his unconsious wife. Also seen on page, 948," Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs." This is the point early on where we see Romeo love sick from his past love Rosaline. From this point his condtion worsended. From here he started to act in more haste which caused his quicker screw up and reversal of fortune with Juliet. Romeo's entire state of being had been affected by this reversal of fortune.
In conclusion, Romeo would be considered a tragic hero through the qualifications of our tragic hero notes. He has shown all of the characteristics listed through the essay and my notes. Him and Juliet together make a very emotional story with the writing skill of William Shakespeare himself.
