Trap Rap

Emerged in late 1990s and early 2000s from rappers in the Bay Area, mainly East Oakland

The Bay Area version of crunk music

High energy and uptempo style, rugged beats, witty lyrics

Examples: Roach Gigz, E-40, Lil B

Gangsta rap

Founded by KOOL G Rap in the 1980s, popular in the East Coast

Lyrics about the mafia, references famous mobsters, and organized crime

Examples: KOOL G Rap, Scarface, Capone,

Originated in 1980s, not a very popular genre

Horror themed, very dark lyrics and

imagery

Lyrics go beyond normal violence, and are very

gruesome and unsettling

Examples: Hopspin, Gravediggaz, Flatlinerz,

Eminem, Kung Fu Vampire.

Conscious Rap

Alternative Rap

Experimental Hip Hop

Ethereal dream like beats, ambient music, uses samples from Indie and other genres

Examples: Yung Lean, Clams Casino, ASAP Rocky

Sample based beats, "far out" references, witty and abstract lyrics, often about or influenced by psychedelics

Examples: Beastie Boys, MF Doom, Chance the Rapper,

Pop Rap

Emerged in the 1980s and 1990s

Structural elements considered unconventional in traditional hip hop music, uses turntablism and produced electronically

Examples: J Dilla, Shabazz Palaces, Gorillaz

Emerged in late 1980s

Wide range of styles of hip hop that are not mainstream, do not conform to traditional forms of rap, blur many genres, reemerged when Indie muic gained popularity

Examples: Atmosphere, Black Starr, Outkast

1980s, originated by Public Enemy, turning hip hop into a call to action and form of social activism,

Challenges popular cultural, political, philosophical, and economic beliefs

Examples: Public Enemy,2Pac, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli

1980s, music about the gangster lifestyle, acted as an outlet so people could express themselves freely, tells stories of their lives

Examples: N.W.A., Ice-T, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre

Emerged in 1980s, when rap became popular

Changes with the times, Popular radio music, lyrics don't have much content, easy to dance to

Examples: Drake, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa

1990s Southern hiphop

"Trap" is the place where drug deals occur

Originated in Atlanta, Georgia

Examples: Gucci Mane, Chief Keef

In 2012 development of EDM changed trap music to be rap lyrics over EDM beats

Examples: "Turn Down for What" by Lil Jon

Rap and electronic music, with more emphasis on producer than rapper

Popular in Texas and Mexico

Focus on drug cartels

Crunk

Created in 1990s, but gained popularity in 2000s

Southern hip hop, chaotic introduction of highly energetic chants and club beats

Horrorcore

G-Funk

Originated in 1992 by Dr. Dre's album "The Chronic"

easy to dance to, sampling P-Funk bands like Parliament with rap lyrics over it,

Examples: Dr. Dre's "The Chronic", "Gin and Juice" by Snoop Dogg
