Mass Production

  • The 1920's welcomed a rise in African American culture, which resulted in the invention of Jazz music.
  • Due to the increase in "black pride" racism also became more prominent
  • Anti modernism

Prohibition on Alcohol

  • The moving assembly line was developed by Henry Ford (founder of the Ford motor company) and changed the face of product development o a large scale.
  • Mass production raised the demand for appliances develop on a large scale, and it is due to this increase in demand, the employment of mass production also resulted in an increase of low skill assembly line jobs.
  • Prohibition in America was a nation wide constitutional ban on the sale, prduction, importation and transportation of alcohol
  • The prohibition was put in place in 1920 and continued until 1933

As a result of mass production, appliances and other luxuries were now more available and more affordable than ever. Mass consumption and consumerism raised the standard of living for a large cross section of the american population. Production on such a large scale lead to an era of materialism.

Speakeasies

Mass Culture

  • Speakeasies also know as "blind pigs" were hidden sections of an establishment that were used to illegally sell alcoholic beverages during prohibition.
  • The word "speakeasies" came from a bartender's term: people were supposed to be able to 'speak easy' and not have to be inconspicuous about ordering alcoholic beverages.
  • The 20's was an age of self indulgence and glamor for many americans.
  • Movies and the mass circulation of popular books and magazines encouraged emphasis on leasure and recreation.
  • The rise of radio, music and Hollywood cinema.
  • Materialism

Some speakeasies were similar to today's clubs, as there was singing and jazz performances.
