What is a folktale?
A folktale is a traditional tale or legend originating among a people or folk. They are many times told by word of mouth (the oral tradition) by the common folk of a town.
It is important to note that Yeh
Shen is the oldest written version
of the Cinderella myth. However,
the oral tradition was the primary
way these tales were told. This is for
two reasons:
1) Gutenberg's printing press was
not invented until 1439.
2) Literacy rates were low. Only the
most privileged could read.
How could this change a story?
Yeh Shen
Cinderella did not begin with Walt Disney...
The first version told the story of Rhodopis,
a Greek slave. While washing clothes in the
Nile River, there is a royal banquet at the
Pharaoh's palace. An eagle swoops in out
of nowhere and snatches one of Rhodopis's
sandals, and drops it at the feet of the
Pharaoh. The Pharaoh seeks Rhodopis out
and falls in love with her.
Sound familiar?
So why are folktales popular?
They are entertaining.
They help us learn valuable lessons and
guide proper human behavior.
They reflect the values of a given
society.
They were a way for people (especially
in the past) to explain mysterious and
unknown forces.
