Illustration music videos typically follow the idea of the video showcasing the song's lyrics in visual form.
An example of illustration would be seen in Jessie J's 'Do It Like A Dude'.
Genre -
R&B
'Do It Like A Dude' uses images and dance moves to illustrate the lyrics in this music video - for example "grab your crotch, wear my hat low like you" is represented through the actions of the dancer grabbing her crotch and pulling her hat low over her face.
Illustration is also shown in the first line of the song - "Stomp, stomp, I've arrived" and Jessie J stomps down the steps.
Goodwin believed there was three ways in which a music video can be connected or related back to its lyrics:
Disjunction music videos show no resemblance towards the song lyrics and prefer to create their own meanings.
An example of a disjunctive music video would be 'Sorry' by Justin Bieber.
The lyrics to the song appear to refer to anybody dealing with hardships and trying to move forward in life, however the music video is a tribute to the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting and the LGBT community.
The rainbows on
her face represent
the LGBT colours and how the people who died were part of the LGBT community
Genre -
Dancehall-Pop/Tropical House
The girl crying suggests her mourning for the lives lost while wearing the LGBT colours on her face
Each dancer in this music video represents a person killed that night - 1 dancer = 1 life lost
Amplification is similar to disjunction in the fact that the music video doesn't match the song lyrics - rather, it adds layers of meaning to the song instead.
An example of amplification would be seen in 'The Greatest' by Sia.
Genre -
Pop
'Sorry' by Justin Bieber has a disjunctive music video to what the lyrics are saying. Bieber's lyrics talk about having made mistakes and begging for forgiveness, however his music video consists of dancers and no actual plot. This music video was described as trying to be "colourful, fun and upbeat" while having "a vintage '90's vibe".
MY FINAL PRODUCT
In my final product, I may apply the idea of an amplification music video to my chosen song - 'Fix You'. Taking into consideration the content of the lyrics, I have decided to represent the lyrics through having two different storylines running at the same time as I feel that the lyrics can have two alternate connotations - sad or happy. In light of this, one of my storylines is going to be influenced by the sad aspect while the other will be influenced by the happy aspect.
