Learning Objective:
To develop a confident understanding of the narrator, Matilda, in the opening of Mister Pip
From the ideas, thoughts and feelings you have come up with, write a short monologue as if you are Matilda.
It should be 2 paragraphs long - approximately 2/3s of a page.
You have 15 minutes.
Compare your version to Jones’s narrator.
Were there any surprises?
Discuss the similarities and differences between your version of the story and Jones’s.
You lived on an island which was tropical and fertile. Your island was called Bougainville.
Your island was isolated because of a war. There were no doctors, medical supplies or schools.
You had rarely seen any white people – only a few Australian mine workers at a distance.
You were ignorant of the outside world. Your mother had never left Bougainville.
Imagine…
You were curious and wanted to know more.
You were 13 years old, with a strong imagination.
As an adult you write a description about the only white man still living on the island. He is a source of mystery and fun because of the way you see him. His name is Mr Watts.
You describe his eyes, his clothes, and his expression.
You’ve never spoken to him. You followed him with other children.
You also describe his wife, who is black and an islander.
You describe her hair and her look.
