According to my understanding of the book cover, the upside down chick represents the transition from the lessons the characters have experience and learned in situations where they 'flipped' meaning that it has changed or flipped their lives around in realizing what the true problem and solution. In addition, the chick was mentioned in Juli's science fair project and she recieved the best grade in the class, which also represents how hard work can flip things around.
The book consists of Juli's and Bryce's perspectives in what they are thinking in situations. In the story, the characters mostly appear to be trying to become the perfect woman or the perfect man due to the comparisons. For example, Shelly Stalls seems to be in the state of being the perfect and prettiest girl in school due to her delicateness, however, Juli is not like Shelly since she is more bold. Another example would be Mr. Baker since he is also viewed as a confident 'perfect man'. In conclusion, the book may confuse the readers since there are two views in different genders.
The characters had to experience their own hardships. Juli feels an emotional despair and embarrassment that changes her emotions about Bryce when she found out he throws away the eggs she offers his family because of the risk of salmonella. Mrs. Loski is super upset about her husband's phony personality and only focused on his appearance, which makes him look like a respectful man but he truly is not one. Lastly, Juli's father has a brother with a disability and has been taking his most of his time into taking care of him.
Unfortunately, prejudice has an aspect in the story. For instance, Bryce had negative assumptions about Juli as they were growing up but finally had the effort to change his perspective. Another example would be Bryce's highly intolerant, judgemental father, Mr. Loski, saying poor assumptions about Juli's family, such as their front yard and their eggs having salmonella.
Family has a big role throughout the whole whole story. Both families have their differences and Mrs. Loski wanted to invite the Bakers for dinner to get to know them better. Bryce discovers more about Juli's family and how her family is very supportive to one another, while he finds out things about his father that makes him upset and dislike his actions.
There are quite plenty of sequence of events throughout the story on a bumpy road. When Bryce first moved in the neighborhood when they were kids, Juli instantly liked him. Then, Juli stops liking him when he starts getting feelings for her. For both characters, they will learn that love is important to fully know the person inside and out. While in the process of learning about that lesson, they will also come to conclusion to understand that making assumptions about others is not good. These lessons will cause them to have a perspective to be more loving towards others.
Another difficult concept is change, which can be tough. A transition from second grade to eighth grade transformed Bryce to become a mature young gentleman. He has learned many lessons throughout the story. In addition to the transformation of Bryce's personality, Juli will change her feelings about Bryce and will fulfill what she has been waiting for since they were kids.
Diligence has been one of the difficult concepts that the two main characters encountered, however, Juli puts hard work and effort in what she tries to accomplish. On the other hand, Bryce lacks in persistence but learns that hard work and effort can cause major results and rewards. Although, the story also consists of hard work not turning in the path of a person's expectations, therefore, the characters faces and learns that perseverance does not always have the ability to change situations.
One of the main characters, Juli, does not let anything stop her from climbing her favorite tree and stands up when construction workers were about to tear it down with chain saws. Her protest shows how deeply she cares about this specific tree. Another main character, Bryce, does not typically share the same exact bravery throughout the story- in other words, he is quite insecure of his actions. Although, over time he will have the courage to express his feelings in public to Juli. The story has a concept about bravery not being in the area in fitting in with society in middle school. These two characters will have a way in being bold from the crowd.
