Vowel Clusters

Single Vowels

Vowel clusters are made up of two or three vowel letters that frequently appear together.

Long Vowels

'Y' as a vowel

Vowels appear in Clusters

Consonants remain peaceful

  • The letter y may function as a single consonant or a single vowel.
  • Y functions as a vowel when it appears at the end of a word with more than one syllable, such as sandy, baby. In this case, y often represents the sound of the letter e.
  • Y also functions as a vowel when it appears at the end of a word with only one syllable. In this case, y usually represents the long sound for the letter Y, such as try, my, or cry.

A Vowel Digraph is two vowels that appear together and represent a single phoneme. Two vowels that make one sound.

Di graph (two written)

A long vowel sound is identical to the vowel names of the traditional vowel letters: a, e, i, o, and u.

Long vowel sounds occur most frequently in two positions:

(1) when a vowel occurs at the end of a word or syllable.

(2) when a vowel is followed by a consonant and the letter ‘e’ at the end of a word.

  • Each of the 5 vowel words also represent a short vowel sound. "a,e,i,o,u"
  • A short vowel does not necessarily mean that its a short word. Although words with only three letters are the easiest to make the short vowel sound out of.
