Hamlet in relation to The Sons of Anarchy

Method of Development #2: Use of colour

Both the costumes and the use of colour in the show help prove the authors thesis by giving the characters a very dark, harsh look to them. The author then creates the characters in a way that makes them loyal and considerate people. This proves his thesis that people are not always as they seem.

Method of development #1: Costume

The majority of the colours you see in the show are dark colours or shades such as black, dark blue, grey and white. There are not very many bright colours throughout the show unless it is meant to be a very happy/exciting scene. The use of colour can be connected to many things in the show; the setting such as the buildings or rooms the characters are in, the weather and the nature surrounding the characters, the costumes the characters are wearing, etc. These colours are used to give the show and the characters a roughness to them. This method of development relates to the creators thesis in the same way that the costumes do, it is to give the audience the sense that even though these characters may look like people they should fear, or people they do not want to have surrounding them, they are actually very kind, protective and caring people.

The use of the characters costumes by Sutter is very important in the show because it gives the characters a very rough, mean look to them. The black clothing, motorcycle jackets and leather boots give off the effect that these men and women are hardcore and are not the type of people you want to be associated with. This method of development relates to the theme because the clothing used proves that one’s appearance can easily change the way people look at them. Although these men may not look like they can be trusted, throughout the entire show, Sutter proves that they are actually very loyal not only to each other, but to others that respect them as well.

Relation of Hamlet to the Sons of Anarchy

Thesis

In the Sons of Anarchy, a character by the name of "Clay" kills his friend who he considered his brother, John Teller. Clay then marries Gemma Teller, John's wife, without her knowing what Clay has done to her husband. Gemma's son, Jackson Teller, begins to feel a bit depressed and confused about his father's death. Jackson starts to have his suspicions about Clay, and starts to become angry and violent towards him. Once he finds out the truth about how his father died, Jackson seeks out to kill Clay.

In “The Sons of Anarchy”, Sutter gives the viewers a very insightful look into the lives of these men and their families to argue that not everyone is who they seem. He proves that stereotypes cause us to judge people by what we hear about them and what we see, even if in reality, that might not be the case.

The author's use of tone: Contrast

Kurt Sutter created this show with many different tones, many of which that can be argued between people. A very strong tone that I think is portrayed in most of the show is irony. I sense the author is trying to display an ironic tone because of the way he uses contrast throughout the show to portray how the main characters are seen in the eyes of others, versus who they actually are. This is ironic because who these characters are believed to be is the exact opposite of who they actually are. The creator is also giving off an accepting tone by trying to prove throughout the show that not everyone is as they seem and that you shouldn’t judge someone by the way they look.

Jackson Teller in relation to Hamlet

In the Sons of Anarchy, Jackson Teller begins to get suspicious about Clay just like Hamlet began to get suspicious over his uncle, Claudius. Refusing to hear anything but the truth, Jackson digs deeper into his fathers death and realizes that it was Clay who killed his father. Similar to Jackson, Hamlet finds out that it was his uncle who killed his father as well. This horrifying knowledge causes Jackson to detest his step-father, Clay, and attempt to kill him. Hamlet also becomes bloodthirsty for his uncle and sets up a huge plan to kill him.

Character Development

Gemma Teller in relation to the Queen

The connection between Jackson Teller and Hamlet, Clay Morrow and Claudius and Gemma Teller and the Queen all show similar character development. Gemma and the queen both marry the enemy and later feel guilty for it, Clay and Claudius both commit a horrifying deed and Hamlet and Jackson both become over-whelmed with unbearable news that's caused them to spiral into a downfall. Whether that downfall be temporary or permanent. All these examples between each pair of similar characters shows how much a like the charcter development in the Sons of Anarchy is compared to Hamlet.

Clay Morrow in relation to Claudius.

Obsessed with becoming President of the Sons of Anarchy and having all the power, Clay Morrow kills his bestfriend John Teller. After killing John, Clay marries Gemma Teller, John's wife, and becomes president of the motorcycle gang. Similar to Clay, Claudius, who is obsessed with power and becoming king, kills his own brother for the throne. After killing his brother, Claudius marries the queen and takes over the throne.

Gemma Teller, mother of Jackson Teller, was very upset when her husband John Teller was killed. She soon put this grief away and married her husbands best friend Clay Morrow. Similar to Gemma, the Queen also had a son, Hamlet. After the death of the King, she was devastated. She also put that grief aside and married the King's brother, her brother-in-law, Claudius. After discovering what Clay and Claudius had done, Gemma and the Queen turn on their husbands and help their sons restore justice.
