David Karp - founder and CEO of Tumbr

$800 million website

Being worth about $200 million dollars himself, David Karp is not only the founder of Tumblr, but the CEO as well.

What's Tumblr and what has it given to the American society?

* On May 20, 2013 Karp sold Tumblr to Yahoo! for 1.1 billion, Karp remains placement of CEO

Now, Tumblr houses about 108 million blogs and is a place where anyone can go and express themselves through gifs, screenshots of life-changing movies, song lyrics, a recap of their day, and tons more. Tumblr is more than a place to listen to music and customize your page like MySpace or add your friends and family like Facebook. There isn't a 140 character limit on Tumblr and it's easily a place to get away from all the social media judgement, especially since remaining anonymous is an option.

Why is David Karp a big deal?

Around the time boys hit puberty and didn't see girls as having cooties, David Karp managed to design websites for local businesses in the Upper West side. Not long after he learned coding at the age of 11, Karp landed an internship at age 14 with the founder of Frederator Studios, Fred Seibert. Seibert was a connection Karp made through his mother, Barbara Ackerman. Following after, Karp managed working with Japan Society and UrbanBaby.

How was Tumblr and David Karp impacted my life?

  • Harness your vision:

David Karp became highly interested in tumblelogs (short-form blogs)

  • Underestimate the roadblocks:

Time had to be divided between consultancy company and wanting to create own tumblelogging platform

  • Network:

Marco Arment: started as engineer partner, then became someone who contributed to the founding and creation of Tumblr.

- Money, connections, and experiences from past businesses that Karp worked for/with also contributed to where he was around the time Tumblr was created.

  • Take the first step:

Karp shut down own software consultancy company and let Davidville (changed to Tumblr afterwards) be his only priority.

As stated previously, Tumblr is a place where anyone can go and express themselves. Personally, it's a place where I can go and reblog my likes and dislikes. I can rant about what really grinds my gears and find new ideas for what I can do with my hair. If it wasn't for Tumblr or Karp, I would probably be stuck with dully scrolling down Facebook and Twitter forever.

David Karp was born on July 6, 1986 in New York City. Growing up, Karp had many advantages to the inside scoop mainly because he lived in the Upper West Side of New York City. Karp's parents consisted of a teacher as a mother and a film and television composer as a father. Having dropped out of school at the age of 15 and going into homeschooling kind of opted him out of the typical teenage life. Socially, Karp was not someone who shined every room he walked in, nor was he super awkward and unapproachable. Instead of doing what every teenager typically does, going to parties and skating with his buddies, Karp took advantage of the time he had and started learning HTML coding at a young age of 11.
