The Bagel Model

What are the 5 key observable cues?

A Model of Behaviour

2 Applications...

B

Body Posture

People often assume systematic, habitual postures when deep in thought.

Posture can indicate a great deal about:

  • The rep system the person is accessing
  • The internal state he/she is experiencing

Brings together all the key NLP behavioural cues

As a "diagnostic" tool

Remember the NLP Communication Model

L

A

Language Patterns

  • Linguistic predicates indicate a particular neurological system or submodality.

  • This type of language is typically selected at an unconscious level and thus reflects the underying unconscious structure that produced it.

Why is behaviour important?

Taking each of the bagel "slices" in turn, what would you expect to notice about someone who is predominantly...

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Kinaesthetic

Accessing Cues

When people are thinking, they cue or trigger internal representations in a number of ways...

  • Non-verbal "grunts & groans"
  • Facial expressions
  • Snapping/tapping fingers
  • Scratching head
  • Breathing rate

N.B. Must be calibrated for the individual

As an "influencing" tool

Behaving

Thinking

How we (or others) behave affects our thinking

How we think affects how we behave

E

  • Behaviours show what internal processing is happening.
  • Changing behaviour results in a change in processing

G

How could you use these cues to influence your client's state/internal processing?

Eye Movements

Automatic (unconscious) eye movements often accompany particular thought processes indicating the accessing of one of the rep systems

Gestures

People will often touch, point to, or use gestures indicating the sense organ they are using with which to think
