The Ghosts are Real and Evil:

Viewpoint #1

"The person looking straight in was the person who had already appeared to me. He appeared thus again and I won't say greater distinctness for that was impossible." (p.25)

"In regard to Griffin's ghost or whatever it was--that its appearing first to the littel boy at so tender an age adds a peculiar touch." (p.3)

"What it was least possible to get rid of was the cruel idea that whatever I had seen, Miles and Flora saw more." (p.62)

The governess calls Mrs. Jessel: a "Pale and ravenous demon" (p.83) who was "There most for Flora" (p.83).

Governess: "I have it from you then--it's of great importance--that he (Quint) was admittedly bad"

Mrs. Grose: "Well not admittedly. I knew it--but the master didn't"

Governess: "And you never told him?" (p.32)

The governess is heroic and good:

The ghosts are real and evil; the governess is heroic and good; Miles' death and Flora's illness are proof of the ghosts' malignant effect and no responsibility of the governess, who did everything possible to save the children from perdition.

"What I then and there took him to my heart for was something divine that I have never found to the same degree in any child," (P. 17).

Flora's illness is proof of the ghosts evil:

"'Take me away, take me away, oh take me away from her!' 'From me?' I panted. 'From you--from you!' she cried. '...I've done my best, but I've lost you. Goodbye.'" (P. 85) [Governess and Flora]

Miles' death is proof of the ghosts' evil:

"'I've heard... From that child--horrors! There!' she sighed with tragic relief. 'On my honour, Miss, she says things--!'" (P. 90) [Mrs. Grose about Flora]

"He was soon at some distance from me, still breathing hard," (P.102)

"I could feel in the sudden fever of his little body the tremendous pulse of his little heart. (P. 99)

He turned to me again his little beautiful fevered face. (P. 102)

"'Whom do you mean by 'he'?'" "'Peter Quint--you devil!'" (P. 103) [Governess and Miles]

The governess did everything possible to save the children:

"'She wants Flora...As I've told you however, it doesn't matter.' 'Because you've made up your mind? But to what?' ... 'Why to sending for their uncle.' (P. 71) [The governess and Mrs. Grose]
