Ragtime

St. Louis & Ragtime

St. Louis was the 'Heartland' of Ragtime. All the greatest composers, and players of Ragtime played and lived in St. Louis. Many rags were published in Sedalia, MO.

Tom Turpin was a St. Louis native who opened the Rosebud Bar--a popular Ragtime venue.

Born c. 1868 in Texarkana. Lived in Sedalia, and in St. Louis for 7 years (1901-1907).

The name "Ragtime" comes from people referring to the style as "ragged-time". Early players would take known songs and 'syncopate' the rhythm so people could dance a one or two step. Eventually 'Rags' were composed by innovators like Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Chas Johnson, and Tom Turpin.

Published "The Entertainer" & "The Maple Leaf Rag in Sedalia, MO. He played at the Chicago World's Fair, and at Rosebud in St. Louis.

New Orleans Ragtime

'Jelly Roll' Morton a.k.a. Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe was born in New Orleans where he earned the nickname 'Jelly Roll' playing in the Red Light district. He played Ragtime and is said to have been a precursor to Jazz, and claimed he "invented jazz."
