VENERATE

STRUCTURE:

SOUND:

CONTEXT:

ven-uh-reyt

The Latin form of venerate is venertus, which is the past participle of the word venerari. Venerari means to obtain the good will and/or worship.

The stem vener- comes form the word venus, which means to desire.

The reader can assume that the grandfather was admired by the boy because of the phrase "number one idol" and "teacher". Therefore 'venerate' might mean 'to honor'.

The word "venerate" sounds like the word "veneration", which is the noun form of the word. It may be used to describe how something honors and/or reveres another subject.

to regard or treat with honor and reverence: revere
