Every 3-5 years there is a national convection held in a different state. During these conventions a president is elected, different issues are discussed, and plans are put into action.
"The NAD has given awareness to the general public, fought for many of their rights as humans, and established ASL as a language. If it was not for this organization many rights would have been violated, and the Deaf community would not be strong and connected as it is today" (Wall 2013).
The reason for the importance of a national association was, “Deaf Americans were beginning to realize that if anyone was going to resolve their problems it would have to be themselves" (Wall 2013). They realized that they would have to be the ones to fight for their own rights.
In 1850- The New England Gallaudet Association of the Deaf was founded
1907- A committee to address discrimination in federal employment was formed
The NAD gave the Deaf community a voice to fight for their rights. It also opened up opportunities for the Deaf community. It has created awareness and protected Deaf rights.
The NAD represents the United States of America to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an international human rights organization.
In 1964- women members of the NAD were allowed to vote
The first national convention of Deaf-Mutes was held in August 1880. The leader of the meeting was Edmund Booth. During this meeting Robert P. McGregor was elected as the first President of the NAD
In 1965- African American members were accepted into the NAD
Edmund Booth was a journalist and advocate for Deaf rights. He is seen as the founder of the NAD. He was nominated for presidency but was declined due to his age. Although he was not the president, he was apart of the National Executive Committee for the NAD.
In 1889 the National Association of the Deaf was the official name of the organization

1972- The first Miss Deaf America Pageant was held during the NAD convention
In 1896- Julia Foley was elected as the first women on NAD board
In 1980, Gertrude Galloway became the first female president
in 1990 NAD fought for the rights of Deaf individuals to be included in “The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Robert P. McGregor was the principal of the American School for the Deaf. He advocated for Deaf rights as well. He was elected as the first president of the NAD.
The mission of the National Association of the Deaf is to preserve, protect and promote the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people in the United States of America.
