formation of ozone

High in the atmosphere, some oxygen (O2) molecules absorbed energy from the Sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays and split to form single oxygen atoms. These atoms combined with molecular oxygen (O2) to form ozone (O3) molecules, which are very effective at absorbing UV rays.

what is ozone?

  • a deep layer in the stratosphere, encircling the earth that has high concentration of ozone
  • the layer shields the entire earth from the harmful uv rays that comes from sun
  • for nearly billion years, ozone molecules in the atmosphere have protected life on earth
