Here is what it looks like...
WHAT PROTEIN IS THIS?
The SHH protein´s full name is the sonic hedgehog protein.
- When the protein is newly secreted it weights around 45kDa.
- SHH gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 7 at position 36.
And what about the cancer and SHH relation?
Known as the programed cell death, apoptosis is possible if and only if the SHH proteins get regulated by special proteases. If this process is not activated, then the cell will never die, and end up finally in the tumor formation.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Organogenesis is defined as the process in which 3 different germ layers turn into specific internal organs.
DEVELOPMENTAL PATTERNING & ORGANOGENESIS
- Pattering the early embryo
Key factor in the formation of:
- The central nervous system
- Anterior/posterior axis of a limb
- Teeth and movement neurons
- it's 23.4% more likely that other genes to cause diseases
CURIOUS FACT!
- The hedgehog gene (hh) was first identified in the fruit-fly (Drosophila melanogaster) by Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus, who later won the Nobel Prize in 1995.
- The hh loss of function causes the embryos to be covered with small pointy projections like the spines of a hedgehog.
Sonic Hedgehog turning a bit evil?
Malfunction and a wrong regulation of this protein may affect:
