Discussion Question: When explaining an unknown environment how do you make it comprehensible to the audience?

Participation - How an Ethnographer goes about it

An ethnographer is never seen as a natural born into that culture

Because:

  • Temporary in your mind
  • Describing events looking in as an outsider

Different descriptions of the same situation are possible and plausible

Key Concepts:

1. Getting Close/Immersion

2. Cannot be completely neutral/detached

3. Ethnographer 's presence impacts environment - revealing

4. Need to be sensitive to how you are perceived

Fieldnotes in Ethnographic Research

By: Dana & Jenny

Inseparability of Methods and Findings

  • "What an ethnographer finds is connected to how she finds it out"
  • Allows more multiple perspectives/POV's to be taken into account

Four Implications

Pursuit of Indigenous Meaning

  • Observe then reflect - find out what activities mean to people

Question:

  • Cannot rely on preconceived notions
  • Inseparability of Methods and Findings
  • Pursuit of Indigenous Meaning
  • Writing Fieldnotes contemporaneously
  • The Importance of Interaction Detail
  • Events are filtered through ethnographer

What do you remember about the jungle scene picture?

Fieldnotes in Ethnographic Research

Timeline - How well do you remember

Writing Fieldnotes Contemporaneously

  • For a coherent account one should write field notes as it exists.
  • Do not learn all at once, but is a 'Continuous process' where the researcher builds new insight and understanding.
  • Fieldnotes should reflect this timely process by including a record of activities that preserve their contingent character.

Take a look at this picture and remember as many details as you can!

Importance of Interaction Detail

  • Field notes should detail the social and interactional processes that make up people's lives
  • There can never be absolute standards for determining when there is enough detail
  • Interactional detail: Helps analyze interconnections between methods and substance.
  • Examining details: helps the researcher see outside their frame and grasp the activity.
  • Writing fieldnotes as soon and as fully as possible encourages a higher level of detail

Questions?

Is this what you were Expecting?

How did your imagination of the scene differ from the picture?

Discussion Question:

How would your biases impact your frame of mind when relating an event?
