Judgement/Evaluation

  • The melting of the clocks was successful because I could not only see time passing but the bending of the clocks is abnormal. This emphasizes the surrealism of the image.
  • The location of it, in the picture makes sense. The background fits well in the overall image as well because people begin to question why in the desert and why clocks.
  • This to me is interesting because there are various ways to interpret it. I feel this work is original because not many would describe things seen in dreams. I haven’t seen a similar work to this one which to me makes it original. Yet again, I think many of his works are original including this one.
  • Surrealism paintings are also interesting because they’re unique and you can basically paint anything and it’s difficult to make sure it makes sense. In this case, it all comes together.
  • Criteria I can list is that its original and provides enough detail in order to make sense out of the picture.

Description

  • Technical qualities of the painting are materials he used in order to show the theme of the clocks.
  • This plays with the subject matter of the whole image because the theme are the clocks.
  • Most of the objects are recognized except his face is hard to see. At first sight it may seem as a cloth when in reality it's a face.

Analysis

  • The work is constructed by movement. The clocks are smooth and it's not the basic clocks where you hang on the wall, they're like clothes.
  • The painting was planned by adding the background first then adding the smaller objects onto the picture, the background actually being in California.
  • There is a repetition of clocks in order to emphasize the theme. There are 4 clocks that are made like they were clothes. He tries adding real life yet confusing objects that give you a hard time identifying them.
  • The emphasis is on the clocks and their movement. They’re bent and almost seem as they are going to fall off where they have been placed.
  • The character is his face although its really hard to see. The objects around it which are the clocks go with it. He ties them in order to discredit the world of reality. By doing this, he adds more meaning into the painting.

History

  • The art work was created by Salvador Dali.
  • He would convert his dreams into art.
  • He uses themes in his painting, in this case he uses time.
  • At the age of 26 in 1931 Dali created the artwork "The Persistence of of Memory".

Interpretation

Elements of Art

  • I would use confusing to describe the painting because many don’t see or overlook the face in the painting. I wouldn’t have seen it if I didn’t read the description of it.
  • Expressive qualities I would use are that it is different in its own way, almost odd but the good kind of odd. This reminds me of dreams that sometimes when I wake up I don’t remember how I got to a certain place or how something happened. It reminds me of this because sometimes we have weird dreams in where we can’t express what we’ve seen.
  • In this painting, surrealism is used to juxtapose the clocks with the desert. This gives us a sense that sometimes dreams are unexplainable and sometimes where we are as well.
  • I remember having a dream in where I was in a car with my family in Mexico. But I can’t remember how I got into the car, it wasn’t my family who told me and I couldn’t understand why I was going in the middle of the school year. It was really odd to me because there were so many unanswered questions just like this painting portrays.
  • This relates to real life dreams that people have in where they just can’t explain the things that occurred.

  • Lines are being used to create a table to make it stand out. Curvy lines are also used to create the objects in the artwork.
  • The shapes used are circles and rectangles to create clocks and tables.
  • The form is the 3D clocks that in this case are flat and smooth.
  • The scenery in the background is used to add space into the painting. He also uses a surface and a tree twig to add more detail to the painting.
  • The colors used are different shades of orange and brown. The background is blue only at the bottom which may at first seem is a body of water. And in one part of the painting its darker because of the shade that is being projected.
  • The texture of the image both contain a soft and a hard feel. The sand and water are both smooth.
