A pioneer of animated film
Born 8 December 1844 in France
He created the Praxinoscope in 1877
The Praxinoscope is an animating device which is the successor to William Horner's Zoetrope
The Praxinoscope runs on the same principle as a Zoetrope (a series of rotating images around a cylindrical drum) but adds the possibility of projection, uses mirrors instead of slits in the side of a cylinder and allows for longer film rolls.
The advantage of using mirrors instead of looking through the slits of the Zoetrope is that the image is less distorted to the eye, and a much more rapid change of image resulting in a smoother animation
It was not nessicarily a new technique introduced, more of an adaptation of the already popular Zoetrope
Died on January 9, 1918, aged 73
