Conviction

The brothers were wrongfully convicted of murdering 75-year-old John Lewis (veteran of Blackstock) based on the accusations by a man named John Stevenson. John Stevenson was in possession of the victims gun and sentenced to life for testifying against the brothers.

The Fight to Free the Innocent

Thomas and Meeks Griffin were wealthy men and sold their 138-acre farm to defend themselves against the wrongful accusation. The men also had over 100 people petition Gov. Richard Manning to commute their sentence. The signatures included Blackstock's mayor, a sheriff, two trial jurors, and grand jury foreman.

Thomas and Meeks have appeared in news headlines again not as criminals but as innocent men. Great nephew of the two men Tom Joyner cleared their and his own families names. Joyner got the pardon from the state appeals court in 2009 nearly 20 yeas after the execution.
