Reasons For Water Scarcity

Over Domestic water usage

Statistics of Desalinated Water and Natural Water in Qatar

(This isn't an image from google it was made by me)

This water park in Qatar is an example of how the government is irresponsibly using water.

Qatar's water consumption is 430 liters per day. This may be a result of the hot weather conditions as Qatar's climate has an average of 41.1°C on a summer day.

Low evaporation

Low evaporation may at first sound as if it is a cool place as there isn't much sun there. This may be true at first, but with low evaporation they will also have low rainfall. This makes land dry. Furthermore, with no rainfall there is nothing to cool the land down, and that make Qatar a very hot place to live

Population size-2 million (2013)

Area of country-11571km2

Capital city-Doha

Largest river- Qatar has no rivers! They have water sources called Wardi’s which is a Hebrew for valley. This means there are no permanent natural water sources inside Qatar.

Highest mountain-Qarn Abū Wā'il

Average Income-11,473 per month

Amount of water used per person per day on average- The reason Qatar is so water poor is because people over drink water, therefore the old consumtion was very high but now it is lower as they are in mid cycle.

Over Extraction of Ground Water

Because Qatriens use so much water, the only thing for them to fall back on is the ground water, which they can't really waste on artificial waterfalls ect. This water however was over extracted and used for unessential purposes, this is still being done.

Effects of Water Scarcity on people in Qatar

Bibliography

How does the lack of water affect the people that live in this country?

Qatar is a 1st world monarchic country located in the middle east. It is known for its international plane company that people use all over the world. The water scarcity in Qatar is the result of over consumption and the government uses it for tourism and aesthetic reasons. Therefore it is not only the countries geographical location, it is the countries poor choice of use for the water. However Qatar is a geographically heated area.

What is Water Scarcity?

Reducing Water Scarcity

The water scarce country Qatar overuses water for nonessential reasons. These are mainly for aesthetically pleasing reasons such as waterworks, and luscious gardens. It could also include fun activities like water parks.

Qatar, like other country's such as Australia is subsidized. This means that that the government pays for some of the water used by that country and therefore reduces citizens money, however the money spent on Qatar’s water is an issue in itself. Since Qatar requires clean drinking water, the government pays millions of dollars to desalinize the water, this is a process where non-drinking water is filtered and turned into drinking water (fresh water). Statistics show that 99.9 percent of the water in Qatar is desalinized. This is not only harsh on the citizens and government paying millions of dollars per year for clean water, but it is also harsh on marine life, having to swim in fresh water when they aren’t used to it. It would be like humans sleeping in mud, there are so many things that could go wrong; We could get sick, sufficate ect.

If Qatar was to run out of water, it would take them 2 days to go through their emergency water.

Strategy 1

Definition: Water scarcity is a lack of water spread across a continent, region, country, or land. It is usually a consequence of lacking rainfall or extreme highlands.

We can help reduce water scarcity in Qatar by re-enforcing and ensuring that Qateriens don’t over use water unnecessarily. One way of reinforcing this strategy is not watering your garden at 11.00am, but at 5.00pm, when dusk is approaching.

Strategy 2

Turn the dishwasher on only when fully stacked. This way you are using the least amount of water for the largest amount of space.

Effects of water scarcity on the environment

Water Scarcity Effects on the Environment

Marine

How does the lack of water affect the environment in this country?

Marine

99.9 percent of Qatar’s water is desalinated. With fresh and drinkable water situated throughout almost all of this tiny country, the marine life struggle as some of the creatures require salt water to survive.

Plants

The plants experience luxury in Qatar, as that is what Qateriens use an over-extensive amount of water on. Therefore plans and flowers are extremely healthy even though they are located in a geographically heated part on the globe.
