Leading a Team

Staff of direction

Walk the Talk

Personal Integrity

  • Know where you're going, get out in front, and keep your flock on the move
  • The staff represents your responsibility to direct people; lead your sheep with the staff, rather than the rod
  • When your people get in trouble, assist in getting them out
  • Remind your people that failure isn't fatal

Make your pasture a safe place

  • BE the values you wish to project
  • When our walk (behavior) is inconsistent with our talk (stated values and priorities), we often experience stress!!!
  • Know and embrace your personal Values (write them down if visuals help; being INTENTIONAL will become NATURAL)

A leader sets the pace in the environment

  • Keep your people well informed, being visible will establish trust
  • Time Management; allot valuable time for every team member if and when they need guidance and direction
  • Be prepared: take the time to address situations before they arise and get out of hand.

from Roots

Building

Emotional Intelligence

By knowing your team, you can communicate on an individual basis

  • Eliminate: "Telling ourselves stories"
  • Manage our emotions
  • Grasp humility
  • Engage in Active Listening

Invest in your Team

John 10:14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me."

Discovering the shape of your sheep

  • Strive to get to know your staff on a personal level
  • If you know your staff and their skill-sets, then you can set clear expectations from the beginning

Core Values

Identify & Commit

Knower vs Learner

"What makes a Shepherd a shepherd isn't the staff or the rod; it's the heart."

  • When asked to make a list of our core values, we were then told to reflect and discern how we could incorporate those into our daily lives; it was tough, but so worth it!

The difference between an all-knowing person and someone with a humble heart

  • If I only display to others 'I know everything', I will not open myself up to learn from anyone
  • Leaders in our eyes are never perfect and can ALWAYS learn something new or open their eyes to new possibilities

Trust

Knowing oneself first

  • A humble "spirit" kick starts trust; embracing and being vulnerable when it comes to humility as a leader is #1
  • By learning to be humble I allow others to trust me
