Malcolm X is beyond deserving of this monument for his admirable ways as a activist for equality. With funding from the Nyc Cultural Affairs group and hopefully many activist groups I believe that this monument can be built and inspire many, and help his legacy be preserved for years and years to come.
The monument idea I have in mind for Malcolm x will be a statue of him made of gold with his arms crossed over each other making and X. Also with one of his most famous quotes engraved "if you have no critics you'll likely have no success". The monument will be placed in New York, the place where Malcolm truly made his mark.
The x that Malcolm makes in the statue will be the true symbol of the statue. Malcolm changed his last name from Little to X with the intent to break away from his slave name. The X in the statue will symbolize America breaking away from slavery and uniting, while also getting to an age of true equality.
I believe that this quote is the best to have written on this monument because it goes beyond just the change for civil rights but reflects in every day life that no matter what you're doing/fighting for. Someone will have a negative opinion but that opinion shouldn't stop the fight for change.
Controversy of
Malcolm
There is much controversy surrounding Malcolm and the type leader he was. However i do think he was misjudged in a way. Many portray him to be a violent human who believed in riots and chaotic uprisings, however he merely just believed in self defense. Malcolm was seen as the bad guy because his ways opposed those of the famous MLK, although looking at the big picture they both wanted the exact same thing, Malcolm X just didnt see the justice in his people being beaten and killed, he believed he had a right to defend himself
Monument in Harlem
Monument in Nebraska
Monument in Manhattan
These monuments are all very similar in the fact that they don't symbolize much of anything. The monument in Manhattan was placed there because where it's he was assassinated, the one in Nebraska was placed there because it was his birthplace, and the one in Harlem may hold the most significance due to the fact that Harlem was his adopted home and where he influenced the most people. However each of these status lack a message within the statues.
Malcolm X's legacy is strong and very evident in not only black culture yet, American history. Malcolm X changed the lives of many young african american in the 60's and is still changing some to this day. He is beyond deserving of a monument that commemorates his tireless ways as an activist.
The idea that I've come up with to preserve Malcolm and his legacy seems to have more meaning than the others already created for him in my opinion. The other monuments don't show any true symbolism for themselves outside of the location. However every detail of mine from the crossing of the arms, the engraved quote, and the location hold a symbol for his legacy and all that he means.
