Explanation of Quote

Language Illumination

This quote illustrates Odysseus and his crew's true desire to reach Ithaca. However, he and his crews' inability go home greatly depresses Odysseus and makes him speak and act differently than he normally would. This quote provides the central meaning and theme of the chapter.

"Circe, now make good a promise you gave me once- it's time to help me home. My heart longs to be home, my comrades hearts as well. They ware me down, pleading with me whenever you're away" (Homer Book:10 Lines 531-534)

A group of men travel to Circe's Palace. When they arrive, Circe drugs them and turns them into swine. One man escapes and goes back to the ship, where he reports what happened to the others. Odysseus goes to rescue them. On his way, he meets Hermes, who shows Odysseus how to defend himself against Circe. Odysseus continues to Circe's Palace and frees his men. He then becomes Circe's lover. Though Odysseus and his men long to go home, they stay at Circe's palace for one year. Odysseus plea's to Circe to send them home, but she tells them they must go to the House of Death first.

Plot (cont.)

Odysseus and his men must now row all the way to the land of the Laestrygonians, home of Antiphates, the king of the Laestrygonians. This decision to row to the land of the Laestrygonians quickly goes horribly wrong. Antiphates and his unnamed wife swiftly devourer Odysseus' scouts into dinner. Then, Odysseus and his men quickly flee to their ships where the Laestrygonians throw boulders at their ships until all but Odysseus' are sunk. Luckily, Odysseus' ship is able to reach Aeaea, the land of the God Circe.
