Aravind Eye Hospital was founded in 1976, by Dr. G. Venkataswamy. In an eleven bed hospital manned by 4 medical officers, he saw the potential for what is today, one of the largest facilities in the world for eye care. Over the years, this organization has evolved into a sophisticated system dedicated to compassionate service for sight. The Aravind Eye Care System now serves as a model, for India, and the rest of the world.

It was officially founded in 1976 by doctor G. Venkataswamy although he had previously introduced innovative programs to deal with problems of blindness in India.
This organization aids Indian social needs regarding the health scenario. Its main focuses are dealing of avoidable blindness which according to our studies we know it was one of the principal concerns Dr. Venkataswamy had.
Functions of eye bank:
- Procurement of eyeballs
- Processing of eyeballs
- Distribution of corneal tissues
- Training to eye bank technicians and corneal surgeons
- Promote public relation activities
- Provide eye tissues for

The organization has established common aims:
-To procure, process and distribute corneal tissues of the highest quality for transplantation.
-Provide eye tissues for research and training.
-Provide support and grief counseling to donor families.
-Promote awareness programmes among the public.
-Equip the eye bank personnel.
There are three types of clients that can be provided with help:
- Paying clients: people who can afford the service.
-Subsidized customers: clients that count with monetary help from the government or other organization.
- Free patients: people that do not count with the acquisitive power to be helped. They money for their treatment comes from the profit made by paying customers.
It is a business-like organization in the aspect that money provided from some patients is re-invested to finance other surgeries.
The sources of income are mainly from donations specially from abroad, countries like USA, UK, Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, between others. Monetary founds also come from paying clients.
The organization accepts qualified workers to volunteer their services.
The focus of the organization is to provide high quality eye care to all patients and keep them in the center of the organization. They believe that respect is the key to success.
Aravind Eye Care Center deliver services not only to India, but worldwide. Their services reach USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia and Denmark.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also receives contributions from the organization.
