President Reagan and Conservatism

Reagan's Presidency

In the Presidential election of 1980, Reagan ran with George. H. W. Bush as his Vice President and won the election with a number in the majority of the electoral votes (Friedel & Sidey). Whilst Reagan rode on the support of his conservative ideas, he pushed and made great strives on the topics of reducing the deficit, unnecessary Government expenditure, and cutting taxes for hardworking Americans. Reagan, following the great success of his first term, ran for re-election and won, just as he had previously done as Governor of California.

Conservatism

Background

Ronald Reagan

and Conservatism

Ronald Wilson Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, on February 6th, 1911. Reagan grew up near Dixon and ventured through high school and eventually on to a local Illinois university. Reagan thrived playing minor league football and studied economics and sociology at Eureka College. In Reagan's post college career, he became a football radio announcer for a local station, before heading to Hollywood after he landed several big movie roles. In total, before Reagan took up a political career, he appeared in 53 films (Friedel & Sidey). Reagan later became the president of the prestigious Screen Actors Guild.

"Conservatism" is the belief in keeping or restoring old principles in society. Reagan was a strong believer and supporter of the idea of conservatism. As President of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan used the platform to his advantage and was able to reach people and talk about this idea. In fact, before becoming Governor, Reagan toured the nation in a bus as a spokesperson for conservatism Friedel & Sidey). Later, when Reagan went on to become President of the United States, he brought his belief to the rest of the Republican Party and to those who had previously shared it.

Reagan's Road to Politics

Reagan holding the position of President of the Screen Actors Guild allowed him to move further into the politics game. In an election in 1966, Reagan ran for Governor of California and won. After his first term, Reagan ran for re-election and was able to keep his post for another four years in the election of 1970 after winning by a margin of over one million votes (Friedel & Sidey).
