Organizations within the mafia:

  • The Russian mafia is mostly just within Russia, however has expanded into other areas.
  • During the 1970's and 1980's, America expanded its immigration policies, allowing Soviet Jews and criminals into the country.

  • In imperial Russia, the majority of the population lived in extreme poverty.
  • Criminals began to band together and create a strict code of conduct based on loyalty to one another and opposition to the Tsar.
  • Following World War II, the death of Stalin, and the fall of the Soviet Union, more gangs emerged, exploiting the unstable governments of the former Republics, and even controlling as much as two-thirds of the Russian economy.

  • From the mid 1960's to the 1980's, approximately 35 million people were incarcerated in Soviet prisons.
  • Approximately 28 to 30 million Russian inmates were tattooed. According to criminologist Arkady G. Bronnikov, who has studied tattoos of Russian prisoners for 30 years, inmates wore tattoos only after they had committed a crime. The more convictions a criminal received, and as the terms of incarceration became more severe, the more tattoos a convict would have.
  • The tattoos present a picture of the inmate's criminal history.
  • The Russian Mafia or Bratva, is a term used to refer to various organized crime elements originating in the former Soviet Union.
  • Although it is not a singular criminal organization, most of the individual groups share similar goals and organizational structures that define them as part of the overall association.
  • Their intent is to gain money and power.

Signs

When the Soviet Union fell the Russian Mafia became very strong and spread across the globe. The Russian mafia takes part in many different types of crime, such as, weapon smuggling, drug trafficking, and murder. It is now considered to be one of the most powerful gangs in the world.

It is believed by the Russian Mafia that "the more expensive, the better". The "Bulls" (serious guys, who spend a lot of time at the gym) used to be seen wearing tracksuits, but now wear cashmere parkas, leather jackets, caps with "ears", and straight pants. Along with this they will wear heavy silver rings and chains.

The Russian Mafia is one of the strongest gangs in the world. It is opposed by other large and well organized crime groups such as the Italian Mafia and the Sicilian Mafia.

  • When criminals began to band together and develop a strict code of conduct, this became known as "Thieves World".
  • Elite Group: made up of leaders, who plan out operations and crimes for lower ranks to commit.
  • Support Group: assigns tasks such as drug trafficking for the lower rank mobsters to complete.
  • Security Group: looks after the security and intelligence.
  • Working Group: they carry out the jobs like kidnapping and human trafficking. Interactions with elite groups rarely occur.
  • Globally, the Russian Mafia has exponentially impacted the black market and global economy, to the point that most money laundering and fraud that occurs in the world can be traced to Russian IOC (International Organized Crime).
  • Data suggests that 40% of all human trafficking is related to Russian IOC, and 60% of drug trafficking can be attributed to Russian IOC financial support.
