The Herero Wars and The Concentration Camp on Shark Island

The Devastating Aftermath of the Herero Genocide:

How Imperialism Was All Tied In

The German people created a whole new genocide against the Herero people. The German people really dehumanized the Herero people. The German soldiers took away the Herero's culture and cattle and made them more like the German's. The Germans destroyed what the Herero had and killed so many off because the Germans didn't like the way the Herero people lived. The German way was the best way according the the Germans and they killed people off just to have these"perfect" people. To the Germans, they were the best and the most powerful so therefore, they thought they had the right to destroy others lives.

After all concentration camps closed, the surviving Herero people were still laborers of the German colony and were banned from owning land. German soldiers were killed, and some were dead from disease, and some were found out to be missing. The remaining Germans created a terrible Genocide and they were rewarded by their colony and the Herero people were just forgotten about. The German military had lots of power and with it, they ruined many lives of the native South Western Africans. Imperialism was used by the Germans and not for the common good. The Germans used this advantage to take away lives and any pride the Herero may have had just to be greedy and power seeking dictators.

Why Shark Island is called Shark Island

Sources:

The many people who died each day on Shark Island were buried in the shallow sand of the beach below. Every day, the deceased were thrown onto shore and when the tide of the ocean would come and go, the remains would be eaten by the sharks who lived in the surrounding water. The deceased natives were treated horribly and the Germans just didn't care because they had their power of imperialism on their side and thought less of the Herero people and their worth.

The native people were forced to work as slaves for the German military and settlers. So many people died while working that a high mortality rate of 45% - 75% was put in order. Food was scarce and some was indigestible. Lung diseases were also common to the slaves and yet they were still forced to work without medical care. Along with common lung diseases, hanging and beatings also occurred. Even babies under the age of one were beat.

How Imperialism helped the Germans take over the Herero

The Genocide of the Herero lasted from 1904 - 1908 and an estimated 1,032 - 3,000 people died during these four years. The Germans used their imperialized advantages to take the Herero people's land in order to settle in the South West African land. The Germans took the cattle and weapons from the Herero along with their land. The native people were then used as slave laborers and were forced to build the Octavi railroad. This Genocide was one of the worst in the 20th century and caused so many deaths that shouldn't have caused.

The Genocide of the Herero People

The Wars and Battles between the Herero and German

When the Herero people rebelled against the German colonial rule and injured the German soldiers, General Trotha of Germany ordered a terrible fate for the Herero people. All men were to be executed and all women and children were driven into the desert where they starved to death and suffered from dehydration. Women and children were also raped by the German soldiers and weren't able to fight back against their attackers.

Phases of the Genocide:

What is known as the first genocide of the twentieth century. German settlers took away the Hereo land so they could settle there and Industrialize the South West African land. The German people took the Herero as slave laborers and put them in one of the worst concentration camps. The Herero leader, Samuel Mahareo went to battle against the German people in the Battle of Waterberg. Some of the Herero people were able to escape their fate in the concentration camp, but some were not so lucky.

The Herero Genocide was a racial extermination and a harsh punishment. Many of the Herero people died due to starvation and dehydration before being moved to the harsh conditions on Shark Island (also know as "Death Island"). After being defeated at the Battle of Waterberg, Herero people were imprisoned and died from disease, abuse, or exhaustion.
