Mary lost her status when she married Edward.Mary wanted to be a rights activistwhen one of her close friends past away.1969 her husband past away.Back to Kahanwake for Mary.

About Mary Two-Axe Early

Mary is a mohawk (aboriginal group of people).She was born on October.4,1911 in caughnagawaga.She moved to Broklyn at age 18.She married an Irish American, Edward Early, she had 2 kids Edward and Rosemary.Mary grew up in Kahnawake Quebec.

Awards She Got

From york university she received an honory doctorate, of laws.One of the first to receive Governor General's award for her service to Canada.She was one of the first to have her name added to the Order of Quebec list.She received a National Aboriginal Achievement award

Difficulys Mary Faced

At age 10 she lost her mother. Opposition from the male first nation leaders.

After the Campaign

Mary was not welcomed to the reserve (a place for special use) after her campaign so she had to stay in her daughter's house that was inherited by her grand mother.Mary's daughter married a band member and moved into the reserve.Later Mary was grudgingly allowed to stay.The male first nation leaders were on the opposition.
