Vengeance:

Death:

Revenge:

The monster turns vengeful because he feels abandoned, neglected, and isolated and his revenge is to make Victor feel the same way.

Due to the Monsters isolation craving affection and attention that it is not given, the monster grows angry and hateful only resulting to revenge..

The novel revolves truly around the subject of death, taking a toll on Victors character.

Victor as the monster

The beginning:

Considering his ambitions, secrecy, and alienation from real life;he is considered a selfish man who creates the creature because he cannot bear the loss of a loved one.Victor may be the true monster on the "inside" by being consumed by his hatred for the creature he created.

The Storm:

The creature as the monster:

Victor starts out with a loving and supportive family but soon every bit of his happy family dwindles away as each passes away.

Victor contradicts the storm to be enjoyable but at the same time alarming. The sublime of the storm shows that victor believes that nature is mourning his brothers loss,at the same time he associates the storm with the monster.

Easily the creature Victor created has an appearance that considers him to be a monster. His soft interior was unnoticed by his harsh appearance being a distraction to his true personality. While Frankenstein would not save a life when it would have cost him nothing, the creature saved a life when he could have perished. We see that while the creature did murder people, he also saved others as well.

“I beheld a stream of fire issue from an old and beautiful oak, which stood about twenty yards from our house; and so soon as the dazzling light vanished, the oak had disappeared, and nothing remained but a blasted stump” (Shelley 24).

After going through these two loss' victor receives a letter from Elizabeth saying," William is dead, that sweet child, smiles delighted and warmed my heart."(Shelley,58)

"During this short voyage I saw the lightning playing on the summit of Mont Blanc in the most beautiful figures. The storm appeared to approach rapidly, and, on landing, I ascended a low hill, that I might observe its progress. It advanced; the heavens were clouded, and I soon felt the rain coming slowly in large drops, but its violence quickly increased … While I watched the tempest, so beautiful yet terrific, I wandered on with a hasty step. This noble war in the sky elevated my spirits; I clasped my hands, and exclaimed aloud, "William, dear angel! this is thy funeral, this thy dirge!..A flash of lightning illuminated the object, and discovered its shape plainly to me; its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect more hideous than belongs to humanity, instantly informed me that it was the wretch, the filthy daemon, to whom I had given life.

"(Shelley,22)

Who do you think is the true monster, Victor or his creation?

Introduction

"The blasted stump"

Sublime Nature

Caroline, his mother does not only take care of Victor but her sick father. As she continues taking care of them " the tenth month her father died in her arms leaving her a orphan and a beggar."(Shelley,18) Caroline then mourns for awhile until she herself becomes very sick "She died calmly and countenance."(Shelley,28)

What is Sublime?

Frankenstein is a classic Gothic Novel that still has an affect on society and literature today. Some of the themes found in Frankenstein are common in modern literature. Some of these themes include...

Monstrosity

"The Sublime is a literary and philosophical concept that referred to the feeling we get when we encountering something in nature that's a mixture of terror and beauty, like a thunderstorm or a giant waterfall or a massive glacier."

The tree comes to represent Victor’s own descent into knowledge, and he will use a similar image to describe himself later in life: “But I am a blasted tree; the bolt has entered my soul” (Shelley,125). Comparing the two descriptions, it is almost as though nature had offered Victor a warning, this memory arouses Victor’s curiosity and excitement, and starts him off on his path towards self-destruction.

The theme of monstrosity plays out through the entire novel. The monster himself being made from a supernatural nature and grotesque appearance, or some may argue that the monster may be Victor being consumed by the shame of his creation and selfishness.
